Thoughts from the CEO

March 2008

OUR GROWING MEMBERSHIP
Did you know that GVEC currently serves approximately 63,000 accounts throughout our 13-county service territory? It’s been a while since I’ve written about the sustained growth the Cooperative has experienced, so that number may surprise some of you. In fact, over the past 10 years, the Cooperative has grown by approximately 27,000 accounts. Many of you may remember that approximately 7,500 of those accounts came to us in 2002 with the consolidation with the DeWitt Electric Cooperative; but the fact fully remains, we have grown rapidly in a short period of time relative to our nearly 70 years in business.

The characteristics of our service territory vary greatly across the 3,500 square-mile coverage area. GVEC extends approximately 120 miles from the western boundary of Cibolo Creek to just southeast of Ezzell in Lavaca County. The western end of the service territory is predominately made up of areas in and around rapidly growing and densely populated cities such as Schertz, Cibolo, New Braunfels and Seguin. In fact, over 65 percent of our members currently reside in Guadalupe County, which also provides the Cooperative with a high industrial and commercial base from companies such as CMC Steel Texas, Continental Automotive Systems, Republic Plastics, Acme Brick and Standard Gypsum.

As you travel across the territory to the eastern and southern portions, you see less population and fewer urban settings, and you see more cattle and poultry operations. Many of the Gonzales and Lavaca County agricultural operations have been in business for many years and have been handed down through several generations.

Our diverse membership makes our Cooperative unique, and provides benefits to the system as a whole: urban, suburban, rural, industrial and residential. Regardless of which part of the service territory you occupy or what type of energy consumer you are, one of our highest priorities is to provide you what we call “customer-focused service.” It’s this commitment to customer-focused service that led us to construct our La Vernia customer service center a few years ago and continues to keep us focused on the quality, convenience and placement of our facilities, our employees and the overall fiscal operations of your Cooperative.

In the midst of all the changes in our membership, the guiding principles of our Cooperative that won’t change are our focus on reliability, affordability and providing you innovative services that help make your life easier.
