Thoughts from the CEO

April 2008

MEMBERSHIP PARTICIPATION
We have just held our District Meetings for 2008 which completes this year’s director nomination process. I personally want to thank each of you who participated in these meetings, and I am pleased to report to you that Lewis Borgfeld – District 2, W.A. “Bill” Lott – District 5 and David Dennis – District 8 have all been placed in nomination for election at the Annual Meeting to be held on Friday, June 27, 2008. A cooperative form of business is founded on the basic principle of member control. This local control is first established by your involvement in the election process and continues through your participation in the ongoing activities of the cooperative. It is your right and responsibility as a member to ensure your cooperative is being controlled, operated and managed in a prudent and fiscally responsible manner.

You need not look far to find examples of the important role you play as a member. There has been a significant amount of press recently regarding the governance of electric cooperatives. The media coverage surrounding a limited number of cooperatives in parts of the country, including Texas, has focused on boards of directors and management who have lost sight of the trust that has been placed in them by the membership. These media portrayals have been a good reminder for all of us. As a member, it has been a reminder of the importance of exercising your right to mold the direction and operation of the business. For boards of directors and management, it has been a reminder to stay focused on the greater good and to not get distracted by personal interests. For these reasons, we encourage each and every one of you to take part in the director election process and exercise your right to influence the direction of your cooperative.

I can tell you that your Board is fully committed to fulfilling our mission and protecting the future of the membership – but I invite you to find this out for yourself. Our heritage is rich and our future is bright, and we are committed to representing your interests in the future. Thank you for your business, and thank you for the confidence you have bestowed in us by allowing us to serve you.
