ANNUAL MEETING
On June 27th, GVEC will hold its 70th Annual Membership Meeting at the
Gonzales High School. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m., where you’ll be
entered into the prize drawings and enjoy chili dogs, soft drinks,
musical entertainment and visiting with friends, board and staff
members. The business meeting starts at 7 p.m.
I encourage you to attend the meeting and take part in the business of
your Cooperative.
LOCAL CONTROL
This is a great time to remind you, as member-owners, that GVEC is
locally operated and locally controlled. Local control is at the heart
of our cooperative way of business. It’s what makes us different from
other energy providers.
It means we’re accountable to you, as individual member-owners, and to
every community we serve. It means when outside factors, such as the
soaring price of fuel, affect our rates, we remain accountable to you
and responsible for keeping your co-op fiscally whole and financially
sound.
It’s easy to overlook those fundamental principles when you get your
summer electric bill. When your energy usage increases and your bill
goes up, the last thing you might think is that we’re looking out for
you.
But the fact is, we are looking out for you. Because you belong to a
co-op, you get to participate in the election of your board of
directors. The Board makes your priorities a part of the
decision-making. They represent your desires to keep rates as reasonable
as possible without jeopardizing the health of your cooperative.
The Board is made up of friends and neighbors from your own communities.
They’re right here to discuss co-op issues.
These are challenging times for all utilities. Across the board, costs
are rising. Your directors are often called upon to make tough decisions
that will affect your co-op’s future. Those decisions are not made to
generate profits for outside investors, they are made in the context of
our community. As our country and global economy changes, we’ll always
look at the big picture with you in mind.
We may not have control over the price of a barrel of oil or the cost of
natural gas, but we can provide information and assistance to help you
manage your energy consumption and cut costs. For example, we provide
free energy audits, on-line energy savings tools and tips, and Plan 7
financing for energy-saving improvements. Give us a call at
1-800-223-4832 and let us help you. You’re a member-owner, and you’re a
part of this cooperative.
