Thoughts from the CEO

February 2010

2010: Building on a Strong Foundation

In past years, we’ve always taken an active and aggressive approach to the future of GVEC to ensure we continue to lead the way in quality, service and innovation. We’ve seen new ideas imagined, new systems designed, and new projects completed year after year.

2010 is no different. Our plan is to continue building on the strong level of service we strive for along with affordable, reliable delivery of electricity to our members.

You will see us continue to perform regular maintenance and upgrades to our electric transmission and distribution systems to ensure our members receive dependable and cost-effective power. This includes pole inspections, replacing transmission breakers, and upgrading equipment and facilities. In fact, we have plans to change out older transmission poles from Hallettsville to Moulton, Moulton to Shiner, Shiner to Gonzales, and Gonzales to Ottine. We will also be inspecting more than 12,000 distribution poles in the La Vernia, Wilson, and Seguin areas.

Upgrades to distribution and transmission lines are essential to ensuring consistent and reliable delivery of electricity. It’s also necessary for us to continue replacing aging equipment, which is why we plan to continue with our five-year change-out of substation distribution breakers/controls. We will be creating Ethernet capabilities in six substations to enhance communications and upgrading line panels to improve relaying capabilities.

The 2010 business plan also calls for underground wire renovation in the Val Verde and Rio Vista subdivisions in Schertz. In addition, we’ll be upgrading the facilities in the New Berlin substation area to improve service and reliability to members.

While there are no major substation or transmission line investments on the horizon for 2010, staff will be in the process of purchasing property and beginning site work for the construction of a new substation in the Yorktown area scheduled for completion in 2011. This additional substation will improve reliability and service in the Yorktown area. Staff will also be focused from a system planning standpoint on the need to prepare for the anticipated growth from suppliers and other businesses generated from the scheduled completion of the Caterpillar production facility in Seguin.

Another capital investment scheduled for 2010 will be the construction of the GVEC Western Operations Center, which broke ground last month. This facility will allow us to consolidate operations in Seguin, Schertz, and La Vernia and replace aging facilities in Seguin. Not only will the Center improve the service that we provide to our members today, it will also meet the needs of our future members, the number which could grow by 100% by the year 2025.
We are encouraged about the year ahead. Our progressive outlook and plan will drive GVEC’s continued push to be an industry leader and a model example for distribution utilities across the country. We look forward to serving you in 2010!
