Thoughts from the CEO

March 2010

GVEC is Your Cooperative

As we enter into March with District Meetings approaching, I’m reminded of the many benefits that the cooperative business model affords us. As a member, you are also an owner of a trusted organization anchored firmly in your community and committed to providing you with affordable, reliable electric service, and value-added products that benefit your life. And as an owner, you have a say in the ways we work for you.

When I say GVEC is anchored firmly in your community, I’m thinking of our members and our families, our neighbors, and the organizations and programs that mean so much to all of us. Across our service territory you’ll see GVEC participating in Relay for Life events, teaching children about electrical safety, encouraging energy efficiency, donating food to local pantries, and much more.

What is not so apparent at times is the fact that GVEC is also engaged in the growth and development of the communities we serve. We support local initiatives with community grants and assist our area Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development offices in attracting industry and events, which work to create jobs and help our local economies prosper. GVEC also consistently works with state and national representatives on legislative initiatives that affect the affordability of electricity.

We strive to be an organization that you can count on to provide you with sound advice and ways to save. GVEC offers expanded services such as rebates for energy efficient appliances, financing for efficiency upgrades, and free educational tools, such as our home energy calculator plus articles and tips in your GVEC Review, written to address saving money and safety for you and your children.

The Cooperative is about you, the people it serves. Democratic Member Control, one of the fundamental principles of the cooperative model, makes your involvement and influence invaluable to the future of GVEC. You can exercise your right to be involved by participating in the directoral election process. This process begins with the nomination of director candidates at the District Meetings. Directors are elected for a 3-year term with staggered district elections held each year.

This month District Meetings will be held for Districts 1, 7, 4, and 10 (see page 27 for locations). Registration starts at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting at 7:00 p.m. I encourage all district members to attend and let your voice be heard through the power of your vote.

In closing, GVEC is here to serve your needs and exceed your expectations. From the Board of Directors to the staff, we are a team of diverse professionals representing you in everything we do. GVEC takes pride in working for you and delivering the unique benefits that only the cooperative way of business can provide.
