Gonzales, Texas– August 30, 2017 – After five total days of restoration efforts, three of which occurred as Hurricane Harvey actively swept through the entire service area, all but 21 outages have been restored for the members of the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC). The remaining few outages will be repaired once flood waters recede.
Due to the impact of Hurricane Harvey on the Texas electric system as a whole, intermittent outages may occur as damage repair continues by utilities in other areas. GVEC crews, support staff, and the Control Center are on call 24/7, as always, to address any issues.
“I cannot say enough good things about the members and employees of GVEC as well as the assisting crews,” says GVEC General Manager and CEO Darren Schauer. “Harvey entered our service area very early Saturday morning in DeWitt County and by mid-afternoon had caused 17,000 outages across our 3,500-square-mile service area. We fought high winds and rain, extensive power line and road damage, and flooding. GVEC prepared early with emergency plans, backup resources, and dedicated employees ready to step up and work all hours of the day and night. Some even worked despite severe damage to their own homes, which says a lot about their character.
“Our members and employees’ families were remarkably supportive during the entire process and our sincere gratitude is extended to them for their patience. The old saying “stronger together” has never been more evident than at this moment. As we move forward in restoring Internet service and general cleanup, we will continue to pray for our neighbors across Texas still dealing with the effects of this unprecedented disaster.”
Updates are being posted to GVEC’s website, Facebook, and Twitter pages. Members can view current outages 24/7 online at www.gvec.org. To report outages or if you have questions, GVEC can be reached at 800.223.4832.
