Members began arriving at 5:30 p.m. and upon completing registration, were served refreshments and chilidogs. Country-western musical entertainment by Ken Brothers of West Point was enjoyed by all while browsing GVEC subsidiary exhibit booths, set up with giveaways for all those in attendance.
At 7:00 p.m., the business meeting was called to order by Board President Lewis Borgfeld, followed by the invocation, given by GVEC Administrative Division Manager, Jim Springs.
Next on the agenda was the election of District Directors. Four Directors were elected to a three-year term on the GVEC Board of Directors. Four incumbent Directors were elected to a three-year term on the GVEC Board of Directors. Robert J. Werner of Shiner will serve as Director of District 1; Shawn Martinez of Seguin will serve as Director of District 4; Melvin E. Strey will serve as Director of District 7; and Don Williams of Yoakum will serve as Director of District 10.
Following the election, was a video presentation of reports to the membership. The presentation featured the different ways GVEC is involved in the lives of its members by creating “moments that matter” for the community and the Cooperative. These are the enduring moments in people’s lives from basic needs to power the refrigerator, to providing electricity to the football stadium where first touchdowns are made. Also discussed was GVEC’s involvement in renewable energy and the steps being taken to stay abreast of the latest technologies and information important to the membership, economic development involvement in the communities GVEC serves, as well as the enhancement of GVEC facilities through the Western Operations Center project now in construction.
A special part of the evening’s program was the presentation of the Public Service Award to Norma’s House, located in Gonzales. Norma’s House, also known as the Gonzales Regional Children’s Advocacy Center, is an organization providing support to abused children and their families in Gonzales County with the primary goal to provide local and timely recognition of child abuse and treatment of victims while minimizing the trauma that they experienced. The staff works with local team members from across Gonzales County including Child Protective Services, local law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office and medical and mental health professionals. The Center has expanded to provide services in Lavaca County as well. GVEC General Manager and CEO Darren Schauer recognized Norma’s House for the help and support they provide. “GVEC commends the efforts of the staff, board, and volunteers of Norma’s House for making a difference in the lives of the children and families of our area who are in need of their special services.” The award was accepted and appreciated by Norma’s House Director Tiffany Rankin.
