Message from GENERAL MANAGER DARREN SCHAUER
January, for many of us, is a time to reflect on the prior year and refresh our goals for the coming 12 months. In a sense, this is no different for the Co-op. By the New Year the Board of Directors and staff have an updated Business Plan ready to serve as a roadmap for the year ahead. The Plan, which is reviewed on a monthly and quarterly basis, includes goals and objectives to accomplish for the current operating year as well as a strategic vision for GVEC’s services for the next five years. It is very comprehensive and covers our three primary Services (Delivery, Energy, and Beyond the Meter) as well as Community, Employees and Financial Strength. With work already underway, GVEC is prepared for a busy and productive 2017.
GVEC’s primary focus, just as it has been since 1938, is on the reliable delivery of electricity to our member-owners. To this end we will continue to ensure optimal performance of our delivery infrastructure through ongoing maintenance projects like tree trimming and pole inspections, renovation projects, system improvement projects and performance metrics. Some of the larger projects for this coming year include construction of the Nopal substation which will support existing and future load requirements. We will also be building 11 miles of 138kV transmission line to the Nopal substation; together the projects will increase reliability and efficiency of the electric system.
As for the Internet, also under Delivery Services, GVEC.net will continue to expand its highly successful Fiber to the Home product in Guadalupe County, including the Cibolo area. The Plan also calls for further improvements to our core business of wireless point-to-multipoint broadband. Major projects include upgrading to a new wireless hardware infrastructure in 22 towers and constructing additional tower sites with the ultimate result of improved speeds and greater bandwidth for these customers.
Under Energy Services, we will continue to focus on meeting the current and future energy needs of the growing GVEC service territory with the goal of keeping energy as affordable as possible. We will also be completing our research on the viability of a community solar project for members along with other ancillary services such as demand response programs and products to help members reduce their energy costs.
In the area of Beyond the Meter Services (GVEC Home), research and focus groups will be conducted to help us better understand member needs for services that go beyond the delivery of electricity. From installing and maintaining high efficiency heating and cooling systems to providing energy efficiency products and services to enhance our members’ quality of life, we want to ensure we provide valuable services as a trusted provider.
Although this is a short list, the Plan also includes many additional projects to help keep the Co-op strong and sustainable. By completing these tasks, meeting our performance goals and continuing to look ahead to future needs, we will continue to provide the level of service that you, the members, expect from us, and that we expect of ourselves.
