In case you’re confused about how these meetings compare to the Annual Meeting or are in doubt about the relevance of District Meetings, we wanted to help you understand the reason for each meeting and why your participation in both is important.
A Meeting for Every District and Member
Each District Meeting is organized around a single geographical region—a district—within the Cooperative’s service territory. GVEC is made up of 11 districts, each represented by a director on GVEC’s Board. Directors serve three-year terms, requiring a new election and vote by district members every three years. This is why each GVEC district holds its regular meeting once every three years.
As noted above, in 2020, we’re holding meetings for Districts 2 and 5.
Why Should I Attend My District Meeting?
The primary purpose of District Meetings is to nominate the district’s Director-Candidate for the next three-year term. District candidates are in turn formally elected by the entire membership at GVEC’s Annual Meeting, which always falls on the fourth Friday in June (June 26, 2020).
You might be wondering, “Why should I attend my District Meeting?” The answer is simple: democracy. Our founders launched GVEC as a partnership with the community. More than eight decades later, we continue operating in collaboration with those we serve, striving to improve the quality of life for all who live and work in the Guadalupe Valley and surrounding areas. This genuine concern for people and community is fundamental to what it means to be a “cooperative.”
We not only value your input in GVEC’s governance, we need it; we would not exist without it and without the consensus of everyone we serve. GVEC is your cooperative; being a member means you are part owner, part of a larger community of member-owners with a say in how their cooperative runs. District Meetings give you an opportunity to meet and mingle with this community and with GVEC staff, too, and to make your voice—your vote—heard.
Keep in mind, too, that Director-Candidates aren’t the only items of discussion at District Meetings. You’ll also get to hear about and discuss other matters and news that concern both your district and the Cooperative as a whole.
For all these reasons, we welcome you and encourage you to attend your District Meeting.
We Hope to See and Hear You in 2020
If you live in Districts 2 or 5, please join us for this year’s District Meetings. And regardless of your GVEC district, we hope you’ll attend the 2020 GVEC Annual Meeting, which falls on June 26.
The Cooperative works best when every member participates. District Meetings and GVEC’s Annual Meeting provide powerful platforms for allowing you to take greater ownership and make vital contributions to our Cooperative democracy.
