Twenty area high school seniors recently each received a $2,500 award through the 2021 GVEC scholarship. That number is more than in any other previous year, with five additional scholarships added in 2021 for graduating seniors planning to attend trade schools.

Although trade school students have always been eligible, GVEC recognizes the value and need for these talents in our area, leading us to increase the number of scholarships awarded. Total awards amounted to $50,000, giving local graduates an opportunity to continue their education.

Over 200 deserving seniors throughout GVEC’s service area applied in 2021. Recipients were ultimately selected based on outstanding academics, extracurricular involvement, community service and a desire to continue education after high school.

“The accomplishments of these students show their dedication and hard work,” said GVEC General Manager and CEO Darren Schauer. “They have participated in extracurricular activities, volunteered in their communities, held part-time jobs and excelled in academics. We want to recognize these outstanding individuals for their commitment to their schools and communities.”

In previous years, GVEC has honored Scholarship winners, their families and their school administrators with a luncheon held at a local restaurant. Due to ongoing limitations on public gatherings, however, a luncheon wasn’t practical in 2020 or in 2021.

GVEC awards these scholarships each spring to high school seniors seeking to further their education. Awardees will receive their $2,500 scholarship upon the start of the 2021fall semester at their chosen university, college or technical school.

The GVEC Scholarship Program is open to all high school seniors whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) are Cooperative members. Applications and requirements for the 2022 GVEC Scholarship will be available in the fall of 2021.
