The Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative has recently announced appliance sales and service through its GVEC Home subsidiary will be discontinued as of December, 2017. From October through the end of the year, the appliance inventory will be offered at liquidated prices while the Cooperative prepares to use the showroom spaces for other needs. While the appliances and storefronts will be phased out, GVEC Home will continue to offer AC/Heating sales and installation, maintenance, 24/7 repair service, and solar panel systems to the public from the GVEC customer service locations in Cuero, Gonzales, La Vernia, Schertz and Seguin.

The decision to discontinue the appliance sales and service portion of the business was a product of today’s consumer preferences and extremely competitive marketplace according to GVEC General Manager and CEO Darren Schauer. “Even with increased marketing efforts and more competitive prices, it has become very difficult to compete with the large “big box” store offerings and online sales. Though we’ve always had good people, products, and service – low price is the number one purchasing factor for the majority of today’s consumers. We simply cannot match the competitors’ pricing and earn a reasonable return in this area any longer.”

Schauer adds, “While the primary purpose of GVEC Home has never been to earn large profits, it must earn enough to sustain itself financially in all areas of the business. This has not been the case for appliance sales and service in recent years. It has been a decision we have struggled with for a while as our appliance stores have been a part of our mission to fulfill the needs of those we serve, especially in the more rural areas. However, this step will allow us to focus on new services we are looking forward to implementing in the near future. Identified through feedback from GVEC members, we believe these new services will provide even greater long-term value to our consumers.”

Appliance customers will not be left without resources Schauer says. “All existing warranties for appliance purchases made from GVEC Home will remain active and we commit to helping our customers locate a solution should warranty repair be needed. We sincerely appreciate our appliance customers for their trust over the last 19 years and hope for their continued support of GVEC Home as we evolve to meet today’s needs.”
