Louie the Lightening bug is a busy guy, especially in January! That’s when Louie goes on his famous safety tour, visiting second graders all around the GVEC service area. This year his tour consists of 38 school visits—that’s over 3,000 students!
Did you know Louie has been around since 1985? Even after 33 years, Louie’s message still remains fresh along with his spirit! His presentation typically takes about 30 minutes and includes a video starring the big bug himself and a discussion about how to play it safe around electricity.
Before Louie leaves, he gives each child a safety poster to color for a classroom contest and the chance to win a prize. Two winners from each school (one boy and one girl) will walk away with this year’s prize: a lunch box (just like Louie’s), a glow-in-the-dark Louie the Lightening Bug t-shirt and a GVEC sports watch!
Even if your children are too old for Louie, you can still help keep safety top-of-mind by talking to your children about staying safe. Your influence may save their lives when they’re tempted to climb a utility pole or encounter some other electrical hazard.
