Government-in-Action Youth Tour


GVEC believes that preparing the next generation of leaders is one of the most meaningful investments we can make. That’s why we’re sponsoring local students for the Government-in-Action Youth Tour! This is a life-changing, all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Plus, each attendee will have a $2,500 scholarship set aside for their senior year, to use toward the college or trade school of their choice!

From museums and memorials to the majestic U.S. Capitol and Supreme Court, there’s a little something for everyone in Washington, D.C.

Join 2,000 teens from across the U.S. on this weeklong adventure jampacked with historic sights and memories in the making. You’ll visit Arlington National Cemetery, Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institute and more! Activities include a dinner and dancing river boat cruise down the Potomac River, meeting congressional representatives, and learning about rural electrification and electric cooperatives.

Youth Tour Washington

Youth Tour Eligibility

  • Applicant’s parent(s) or legal guardian(s) must have an active electric account in their name, in good standing.
  • Applicant must be a high school sophomore or junior, during the 2025–2026 school year.
  • Applicant must reside in the GVEC electric service territory.
  • Applicant must be able to travel from June 14 to June 22, 2026.
  • Applicant must be physically able to travel for several hours by car, bus, boat and plane, and walk extensive distances.
  • Children of the GVEC Board of Directors and employees are eligible to apply.

Youth Tour Deadline

Applications open October 28, 2025, and must be received by 5:00 pm on January 15, 2026. Youth Tour winners will be notified early March.

Applicant Information

This online form is part of the 2026 Government-in-Action Youth Tour Application. You’ll need to provide basic personal, parent/guardian, and school information, upload your resume (PDF only), short answer(300 words or less), two letters of recommendation, unofficial transcript and a recent color headshot. As part of the selection process, applicants will be interviewed by GVEC staff. You can save your progress and return later before submitting. All materials must be completed and submitted by 5:00 p.m. on January 15, 2026.

Resumes will be scored for a total up to 40 points based on information such as work experience, extracurricular involvement and activities, examples of leadership positions held, and honors and awards.

Supporting Materials

The recommendation letters will be scored for a total of up to 30 points based on information from the reference, such as positive feedback about the applicant, how the applicant works well with others and the mention of leadership qualities about the applicant. Acceptable letters of recommendation are from a school employee or coach, a community leader, a church leader or an employer, aged 18+ and of no relation to the applicant.
