At GVEC, we are always interested in solutions that strengthen our electric system while also delivering fair and transparent value for our members. Building on that commitment, we’ve enhanced our net metering practice and process under GVEC’s Tariff and Interconnection Agreement to support members who generate their own power.
Net metering is a billing concept that allows consumers who generate their own electricity to receive credit for the excess energy they send back to the grid. Their bill reflects the “net” difference between the electricity they consume from the grid and the electricity they export, often creating a one-for-one exchange.
It is also a way to account for the kilowatt-hours (kWh) flowing both into and out of the grid and is particularly significant for GVEC members with a renewable account. This net metering or net-neutral method ensures the member’s bill reflects the full value of both the energy used from the grid and the energy contributed. In other words, if you pay for each kWh consumed, you should be credited the same amount for each kWh exported.
Members who invest in renewable devices or distributed energy resources play a crucial role in maintaining reliable, affordable and sustainable energy. Not only do they help lower their own costs, but they also support the broader grid by sharing excess power, lowering the costs for everyone. GVEC aims to ensure fairness and equity for these contributing members and to recognize the value they provide.
In the past, members with a renewable account were credited for exported energy at the Generation & Transmission (G&T) Charge. Going forward under the new Tariff, all energy exported through the member’s meter—whether from solar panels, batteries or both—will be credited at both the G&T Charge and the Delivery Charge. With this update, billing will remain concise, with a single line item called ‘Renewable Energy Credit’, where members will see both the G&T Charge and Delivery Charge credits as a combined bill credit.
As your Cooperative, we remain committed to practices that encourage transformation, create transparency and benefit every member we serve. If you’re considering solar or battery storage, now is a great time to explore how renewable resources and net metering can work for you.
