October is National Cooperative Month, but you’ll see examples of what that means at GVEC all year long. From Youth Tour and scholarships to public service recognition and the Lineman’s Rodeo, the cooperative advantage shows up in many ways beyond providing a service.
Did you know that when you have GVEC electric service, you become a member of a not-for-profit organization distinctly termed as a cooperative? Cooperative members have benefits beyond those of a customer that are unique to this business model. Any excess funds generated are used first to pay down cooperative debt and invest in needs or services, then returned in the form of capital credits back to our member-owners. It was such a pleasure to be able to return over $12 million just this past July, the largest capital credit disbursement in GVEC’s history to date. As a member, you also share local democratic control by electing the Board of Directors, staying informed through meetings, and even receiving resources such as the The GVEC Review as part of the Texas Co-op Power magazine.
Homeowners and businesses alike can take advantage of the many options GVEC now provides to help save money and energy as well as live and work in a more connected community. We are proud of the fact that thousands of customers, members and nonmembers alike, have chosen to utilize our Internet, HVAC, solar and battery storage, and electrician offerings, which have become just as important as electricity for living a comfortable, modern lifestyle.
Aside from the business services of GVEC, one of my favorite areas of the Cooperative to discuss is investing in our communities. For any one of us, that may mean volunteering our time at a local animal shelter, collecting fans to combat the summer heat, or even just joining in on a local festival. We take great strides to support area organizations and youth, from funding to education, and constantly work with our local, state, and federal legislators to solve problems affecting us all.
In addition, folks might be surprised to know we also spend time with economic development representatives locally and across the country helping attract and recruit new business and industry to our service area, making way for new jobs and development in the South-Central Texas region. It’s the cooperative way to give back for the good of all, and it’s the greatest way I know of to make a meaningful difference for the people and communities we serve.
National Cooperative Month is about celebrating the people who are part of GVEC. It’s a good reminder that we all have a stake in GVEC’s success—members, employees, and directors alike. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the GVEC Board of Directors and lead the employee team that works tirelessly to continuously shape and support the Cooperative services we all depend on.
Thank you for your membership, your participation, and your continued support of GVEC. As always, I welcome your feedback and encourage you to reach out with any questions or concerns by phone at 830.857.1152, by email at [email protected], or by mail at P.O. Box 118, Gonzales, Texas 78629.
