At GVEC, we believe that preparing the next generation to lead is one of the most meaningful investments we can make. That’s why I’m proud to share that in 2026, GVEC will sponsor local students for the Government-in-Action Youth Tour—a life-changing, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. As an added bonus, each attendee will have a $2,500 scholarship reserved for their senior graduation year to a college or trade school of their choice!
Since 1965, Texas electric cooperatives have joined together to send students from across our state to our nation’s capital. Youth Tour began as a way to educate young people about government and civic engagement, and it has grown into what many describe as “the trip of a lifetime.”
Delegates tour historic landmarks, meet with members of Congress and connect with hundreds of peers from across the country. The experience gives students a broader perspective of the world and a deeper understanding of the role policy makers play in shaping our future—including the future of electric cooperatives and how power is delivered to communities like ours.
The 2026 Youth Tour will take place June 14–21, 2026. Applications open October 28, 2025, and must be submitted by January 15, 2026. Winners will be announced in early March. You can find more details about this program and the application on our Youth Tour page.
I’m confident we have many exceptional students in our communities ready to step forward and represent GVEC with pride in Washington, D.C. If you’re eligible, I encourage you to apply for this one-of-a-kind opportunity. Youth Tour is more than a trip—it’s a chance to grow as a leader, understand the impact of civic engagement and experience the cooperative spirit in action.
