If you’ve spotted a brightly painted squirrel around Seguin, don’t worry-you’re not nuts! You’ve discovered a part of the Seguin Squirrel Trail, a community art project adding charm, color and a playful spirit to the city’s streets.
WHIMSICAL WELCOME
The idea to add the squirrels first took root about five years ago, when the Seguin Commission on the Arts began looking for creative ways to showcase local talent and bring art into everyday spaces.
Today, the trail has become a signature attraction with about 45 squirrels sponsored across town. Each fiberglass squirrel is uniquely designed and hand-painted by a local artist, transforming an ordinary critter into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. From bold patterns to scenes that reflect local culture and history, no two squirrels are the same.
SQUIRRELS WITH STORIES
Each squirrel has a name, a personality and a backstory thanks to the artists who brought them to life. You might meet Joy welcoming visitors at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church or Saver the Squirrel keeping watch at Schertz Bank & Trust. There’s even a Guadalupe River-themed squirrel hanging out in Central Park. With more being added, the trail is constantly growing, making every return visit a chance to spot a new friend.
HOW IT WORKS
Anyone — whether an individual, club or business — can sponsor a squirrel. The main requirements are that it must be placed in a public space and the artwork must be approved by the Commission to ensure it’s suitable for public and family-friendly viewing. If a location isn’t available, many squirrels have found a fitting home in the city’s parks, which are quickly filling up.
From start to finish, the project is a true community effort. The Commission orders the sculpture, provides the concrete base, and applies a protective clear coat once the artwork is complete. Sponsors cover the initial cost of the squirrel, choose the theme and name, and hire the artist to bring their vision to life. Afterward, the Seguin Parks team installs the squirrel on its base, and the Commission assumes responsibility for maintenance and repairs to keep each sculpture in good condition and looking its best for years to come.
“It’s a great way to get people to explore and opportunities for local artists to show off their talents. The goal is to engage the public in the arts,” said Main Street Director Blaire Friar.
A COMMUNITY TREASURE
The squirrels are scattered across town, creating a self-guided “trail” that visitors and residents alike can follow. Stroll downtown, head to community landmarks or wander through unexpected spots — you never know when the next squirrel will pop up. It’s part scavenger hunt, part art walk and all Seguin. And because new squirrels continue to appear, it’s worth exploring all areas of town to see what’s new.
The project’s blend of fun and community spirit has even earned statewide applause. The Squirrel Trail has picked up awards from tourism and visitor associations, proving that Seguin’s quirky idea has real staying power as both an attraction and a celebration of local talent.
GET OUT AND EXPLORE
The Seguin Squirrel Trail is about connection. Families, friends and visitors are invited to take selfies, share sightings and enjoy the creativity sprinkled throughout town. It’s the kind of project that makes you smile, sparks conversation and reminds us all that art can be as fun as it is meaningful.
So the next time you’re in Seguin, keep your eyes open. A colorful squirrel might be waiting just around the corner, ready to surprise you with a little nutty delight.
