The last thing homeowners need in the winter is for their AC/heating systems to break down. Exercising some easy maintenance measures can help you avoid this and may even help your unit run more efficiently.

Here are a few simple steps you can do to help keep your HVAC system “in check” this winter:

Change Your Filters Regularly

Changing your air filters regularly is essential to keeping your AC/heating system in good working order. It’s also one of the easiest things you can do. Dirty filters can cause your unit to work harder to heat or cool your home, making it use more energy. Be sure to check your filters every month and change them as least every three months—or sooner if necessary.

Leave Your System On

While it may seem logical to turn your HVAC system off when your away from home, doing so can be bad for your unit and your wallet. It doesn’t help you save money; in fact, it can do quite the opposite. Once you turn your system back on, it must work harder to reach the desired temperature. This can be a costly mistake that can result in damage to your unit as well.

Keep Your Condensate Lines Clear

Gunky condensate lines full of mold and residue may cause blockages that make your unit run less efficiently or even cause water to overflow into your home. We recommend cleaning the line monthly with a simple solution of one cup vinegar to one gallon warm water.
