They’ll fool you. At first glance, you’d swear they’re the real thing.
The maple grain. The glossy finish. The tiny tuning pegs. Even the unmistakable body shapes of some of the world’s most iconic guitars. It’s only when you notice one resting comfortably in the palm of a hand that you realize you’re looking at a miniature masterpiece.
That’s exactly the reaction local craftsman Rob Gwynne is hoping for.
For Gwynne, who moved to the GVEC service area in 2015 after living nearly four decades in California, creating miniature-scale guitars is far more than a hobby. It’s the culmination of a lifetime spent mastering precision.
“I’ve made things small all my life if you stop and think about it,” he said.
Born in New Zealand, Gwynne left school at 16 to begin a career in jewelry making, where patience, steady hands, and an eye for detail became second nature. But his fascination with guitars started even earlier. Growing up, he admired British rock group The Shadows and dreamed of owning one of the Fender® guitars they played.
“As a child,” he recalled, “I thought, ‘One day I want one of those guitars.'”
Years later he finally bought a Fiesta Red Fender. Then, around age 20, he challenged himself to build one—only much smaller. And now, more than 60 years later, he’s still perfecting the craft.
Each guitar takes about four to six weeks to complete. Carved primarily from maple, Rob builds every piece by hand using photographs to recreate each curve, contour, and tiny detail with remarkable accuracy. Some pieces have been embellished to include sterling silver, 14-karat solid gold, brass, and even diamond fret markers.
His work is so authentic that reproducing many of the iconic designs requires official permission from the manufacturers them-selves. Earlier this year, after writing Fender to explain his work, Rob received a phone call. Actually, he received two. He ignored both because he didn’t recognize the number. The voicemail? It wasn’t Fender’s legal department calling—it was the company’s CEO, granting Rob verbal authorization to produce his mod-els, complete with Fender’s name, logo, and other trademark features.
Every guitar begins long before he picks up a tool. More than once, he’s found himself lying in bed mentally working through every detail and challenge until the solution finally comes together.
“Before I come sit down at my jewelry bench to make it,” he said, “I’ve already made it in my head.” Rob makes each miniature guitar one at a time and prefers to keep it that
way. He has created custom replicas by request for friends and gift-givers who are fans of artists ranging from Merle Haggard to David Bowie. Others have gone to serious collectors. Rob is careful about which projects he takes on and where his creations find a home. Even so, his work has caught the attention of a few celebrities, so anything is possible.
Approaching 80, Rob is still learning new techniques, still refining his artistry, and still proving that true craftsmanship never goes out of style.
