The Gonzales Crystal Theater first opened its doors in 1913 with vaudeville shows and silent films, later showcasing its first “talkie”—The Singing Fool—in 1929. Over the decades, the historic venue evolved alongside the community—serving at various times as a movie theater, coffee house, and home to the Gonzales Little Theater before eventually closing its doors.
Over the following years, the Crystal had fallen into disrepair. Through countless volunteer hours and donated labor, the theater was rebuilt, revived, and reopened in 1982, once again becoming a center for arts and entertainment in Gonzales County.
Over the years, the Crystal hosted comedies, dramas, and musicals including The Philadelphia Story, Oklahoma, Steel Magnolias, Harvey, MASH*, Fiddler on the Roof, and Nunsense. Collaborations with Texas State University and local performers expanded opportunities for community involvement and emerging talent.
Following another temporary closure, the Crystal reopened in 2006 with a renewed focus on youth programming. Its summer youth workshops, now entering their third decade, continue to train theater interns and future arts leaders.
In 2010, the Shakespeare Ninja Program was created with encouragement and support from former GVEC Director Bob Young in association with Shakespeare at Winedale and the University of Texas. Now in its 16th season, the program remains a vital part of the Bob Young Youth Program, helping scholarship students attend Winedale residential camps and internships.
The Crystal also helped launch the Young Texian Troupe in 2012, preserving Texas history through performances centered on the Immortal 32 and the Runaway Scrape.
When Hurricane Harvey damaged the theater in 2017 and insurance denied coverage, the organization continued rehearsals in alternate locations until restoration funding—including support from a GVEC Power Up grant—helped restore the property.
Today, the Crystal Theater serves as both a historic landmark and vibrant performing arts center, supporting programs such as the Gonzales Youth Ballet, Shakespeare at Winedale performances, and annual productions of The Nutcracker.
GVEC is grateful for the Crystal Theater’s dedication to preserving the arts, history, and opportunities for future generations. As a token of appreciation, GVEC is donating $5,000 to the Crystal Theater for its continued service to the community.
